Tazawa to have Tommy John surgery

4/1/2010 -- The Red Sox today announced that Tazawa will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire 2010 season. Although this is a most dissapointing result of the injury, many pitchers have come back healthy from the surgery in the recent past according to the Sox, and they expect the same from Tazawa.

"Typical Tommy John timeline," said Theo Epstein. "You're looking at 10 to 12 months, but we're usually a little conservative. There's a chance he could have a Spring Training next year and pitch early next season."

3/30/2010 --
Tazawa said on Tuesday morning that Dr. Andrews determined there is a problem with a ligament in his right elbow. The pitcher has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament that could require surgery. The Red Sox and Tazawa are currently determining the best approach to the injury.

"I can still throw so I don't feel that terrible," said Tazawa through a translator, "I think for me the tightness I was experiencing was fairly normal and what I was used to, so if it was completely up to me I probably wouldn't have gone ahead and gotten the exam. At the same it's an opportunity to find out what exactly is going on and exactly what the reasons are."

3/29/2010 -- The Red Sox today announced that pitching prospect Junichi Tazawa had his right elbow examined by Dr. James Andrews, after feeling tightness during a bullpen session. Dr. Andrews is well known in the sports world, and is usually called upon when a team feels they are dealing with a potentially serious injury.

"He'd been dealing with some discomfort, some tightness, in the second half of last year," said Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell. "He went through a normal off season, didn't have any issues, came into Spring training, went through every outlined throwing session that we had, and there were varying degrees of tightness or discomfort at different points this spring."

Tazawa, 23, finished with a 7.46 ERA in 4 starts last season. Those stats however are pretty deceiving, as many in the Red Sox organization have high hopes for the righty, who pitched in his first professional game last season.

Texas no longer interested in Lowell

4/1/2010 -- After a source said yesterday that the Rangers may still be interested in Mike Lowell, today's waiver pick up of Ryan Garko put that to rest. The Rangers no longer have a need for Lowell, and Red Sox GM Theo Epstein said today that there "hasn't been much trade activity" with Lowell, and that he is looking forward to bringing him back as "an important bench guy".

Clearly Theo cannot really be happy that Lowell will be on the roster, given the amount of times they unsuccessfully tried to trade him over the past year. If Lowell can prove he is healthy over the first month or so of the season, the ed Sox will almost surely trade him once they can find a partner.

3/31/2010 -- A league source told ESPN today that talks between the Red Sox and the Rangers regarding Mike Lowell have accelerated, and a trade still remains a possibility. The Rangers have sent scouts to a number of Red Sox spring training games, as recently as yesterday. It's also a possibility the Rangers will want the Sox to eat more than $9 million of Lowell's $12 million 2010 salary, which is what the teams originally agreed upon in the off season.

Patriots preseason schedule announced

Report: Sox, Beckett close to deal

According to Jon Heyman of SI, the Red Sox and Josh Beckett are close to finalizing a four-year contract extension. ESPN first reported yesterday that the deal would be between $65-$70 million. Heyman says the contract will be closer to the $70 million mark.

The Red Sox will most likely announce the extension just after the start of the regular season next week.

Report: Patriots 'love' DT Odrick

According to WEEI, a source has said that the Patriots "love" Penn State defensive tackle Jared Odrick. The former Nittany Lion had 43 tackles and 7 sacks as a senior in 2009. He is a projected first-round pick.

The Patriots hold the 22nd pick in the draft, it is unknown if the team has held a private workout for Odrick.

Pierce injures shoulder in practice

During practice Wednesday, Paul Pierce injured his right shoulder, the same one he hurt against the Spurs in Sunday night's game. According to coach Doc Rivers the injury doesn't appear to be too serious, but he's not sure if Pierce will suit up tomorrow night against the Oklahoma City Thunder and Kevin Durant,

On another injury note, Kendrick Perkins practiced fully today and is expected to play tomorrow, after missing the previous two games with left knee tendinitis.

Patriots wine and dine Tebow

According to the Boston Herald, former Florida QB Tim Tebow has been in New England since yesterday spending time with Patriots brass. Head coach Bill Belichick and player personnel director Nick Caserio took Tebow to a North End restaurant last night, and apparently is spending time today with the team.

Tebow has also spent time recently with AFC East rival Buffalo.

Red Sox close to deal with Beckett?

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Red Sox have put an offer on the table for pitcher Josh Beckett. The deal is reportedly for four years and worth in the range of $65-$70 million. According to a source, there is optimism that the deal could be finalized in the next week or two.

Rangers may still have interest in Mike Lowell

Jim Reeves of ESPNDallas is reporting that the Texas rangers may still have interest in Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell. According to a team source, the Rangers are looking for options at third base since none of their younger players have stepped up in spring training, and scouts keep coming back to Lowell.

Over the winter Lowell was traded to the Rangers for catcher Max Ramirez, until the trade was voided due to injury concerns about Lowell's hip and thumb. The Rangers still believe they could get Lowell for that same player. The Red Sox were also willing to pay $9 million of Lowell's $12 million 2010 salary.

Report: Boof Bonser could begin season on DL

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI, Red Sox pitcher Boof Bonser could start the season on the disabled list. Bonser is scheduled to pitch Saturday in a minor-league game in Fort Myers, which means that he will not be traveling with the team for an exhibition game Sunday against the Nationals in Washington. This suggests, according to Bradford, that Bonser could begin the season on the DL.

Bonser has been experiencing stiffness in his groin since last week, he was signed as a free agent this year.
